The Jews were promised what was then called Caanan by God all they had to do was go in and kill everything that breathes (seriously). They failed to do that and got caught up in the idolatrous practices of the locals ( burning children -alive- as sacrifices to their gods was one of the reason God wanted rid of the locals)
