N.Ireland Protestant Catholic Other demographics and Nationality results from Census 2011

These are some of the best maps that ive found on the subject at hand. I'll put any other good ones i find up here as well.  The biggest news for me has been the emergence of a "northern Irish" identity. Whatever else this might mean i think its actually good news for unionists as a northern Irish identity is essentially an identity that is ok with the current constitutional situation. On that I think that the current protests by loyalists actually feed into this identity.. underneath the anger against the loyalists is a recognition that republicans have stirred the shit here on this issue..those who have been pushed away from loyalists by their recent actions have also been pushed away from republicans who (all though staying quiet currently) have been tarnished by this aswell because their actions started this off..(not to mention the naming a playground after an IRA guy)  The alliance are going to do well out of all of this which is ironically a good thing for unionists/loyalists cause a vote for alliance is ultimately a vote for the union (or independence I guess). Unionists and loyalist will just have to start to learn how to live where they are a minority.

Next Gen broadband usage in the Republic

Where the next the generation of Broadband is likely to take off. Interesting in that this is in someways the clearest representation of urban Ireland I've come across giving a truer (as i understand them) picture of the sizes of Irish cities and towns. For example Cork city is recorded as having decreased in size in the last census yet the reality is that the small towns (ballincollig, glanmire, carrigaline) around significantly increased. This pattern is replicated in other areas as well. I wonder if city boundaries will be redrawn in the future?
I have forgotten where i found this map.

King Billy in Ireland

Not the best one i've found... Basically he starts in the north in 1689 and works his down to Kinsale for the last battle in 1690. Orange Order made this map in conjunction with the creation of a tourist venture whereby people can follow the "williamite trail". Original can be found here : http://www.grandorangelodge.co.uk/nomadic.pdf

Irish Bible Maps!

Little map from an Irish monk of the division of the Promised Land according to the bible. The Jews were promised what was then called Caanan by God all they had to do was go in and kill everything that breathes (seriously). They failed to do that and got caught up in the idolatrous practices of the locals ( burning children -alive- as sacrifices to their gods was one of the reason God wanted rid of the locals)

Hurling Regions

so only 3 counties - Waterford, Killkenny and Tipperary are totally in the hurling zone. Im told that there are football only parts of Tipperary though.  One might be surprised to see that cork seems to have a smaller area of hurling land compared to its success but you should know that the shaded area includes the city which  has a lot of teams for a realtively small area.

Offally was not a hurling county until the late 1970's . The GAA conducted an experiment/program to help a non-traditional county upgrade its hurling. The result was that offally won 4 all -ireland since and   took 9 leinsters. Not bad going. I'd love to find out more about this program. Perhaps a specialist out there could get a book out of it??

There a few counties that have small hold outs. Kerry, Carlow (all though in fairness Carlow is small enough that this area takes up about a 1/4 of the county!) Antrim and Down. Roscommon also appears shaded here but i dont know if that's accurate or just the way it was drawn.

Im not sure what qualifies as true hurling country; I know that some of the shaded areas have great football teams and likewise there are great hurling teams from outside the area aswell. All of the cities undshaded- Galway, Dublin and Belfast all have big hurling teams.

Potato Famine of the 1840's

The only thing i want to note is that the north was a linen centre and as such didn't rely on the spud for food. The areas which really suffered were the ones that did so.

Can't figure out the difference between the red dot for 100% catholic and the red dot for just under 80% protestant...

Orange Order lodges in Northern Ireland

Taken from Sneps.com

Don't have any figures for the counties but it would seem from looking at this that Armagh has the highest concentration. There are 44 lodges in the Republic (see earlier post for map) which means there are about 1350 lodges represented on this map.  The OO is divided into 12 counties- the six traditional northern ones (derry is londonderry of course) plus the city of Londonderry and city of belfast plus 4 border counties - Cavan, Donegal, Leitrim, Monaghan.  These 12 counties are split in districts of which there are 126. A map of them i would like to get.  Each county has a county lodge and each district has a district lodge and then there's the ordinary lodges. If any of that is wrong please let me know.

Golf courses in Ireland

Ok so once i was told that there are over 400 golf course in Ireland. Did that include the north ? According to this map there is about 75 in the north. The listings for Ireland start at 42 so I'm sure we are missing some particularly in the Dublin area but id guess the total is under 300 (according to this Map)

Bogs in Ireland

I lived a few km away from a  bog (raised or blanket i can't be sure but i think it was a blanket one) and its not on here so how much you can trust it ... I got this from an article which was basically attacking Bord Na Mona for stripping bogs of turf for fuel for power stations. I thought BnM made bags of peat moss! Just shows you never get finished of learning about your own country.

Kennedy Surname density map mid 1800's

Taken from surname origins.ca

I have two friends called kennedy. One is from Tipperary and it would seem from this map that he comes from a long line of them. The other is from the north and he tells me that his surname was originally scottish. That might explain the amount of them that are in that area. Interesting to note that even in the middle of the 1800's people were still been drawn to Dublin. I suspect that we will see more of these kinds of maps in the future. I would definitely like to see one for my own family name. The website apparently is going to do maps based on the 1901 and 1911 census aswell.
BTW if you click on the image for the bigger map you will see the counties are further subdivided. These are the parish boundaries of Ireland. When i find a really high-resolution one of these i will post it.

Just another reason not to live in Connacht then...  White areas on map only refer to areas that not enough houses took part in the survey.

All roads lead to dublin...

                                                    Taken from Bock the robber

Well all motorways lead to dublin... Hopefully the atlantic corridor will be finished some day and one can drive from Letterkenney to Cork. In which case we will be able to say all roads lead to Cork. As it should be.

Recently i drove from Dublin to Donegal. The drive through Sligo and Leitrim is one of the prettiest in the county. On the way back we took the shorter route through Fermanagh- It added an hour to our journey. It was like travelling back to the eighties.

Fracking

Taken from stevendonnan.blogspot

That orange space is the so-called Northwest Carbinoferous basin. Carbinoferous means it has coal. Any fracking that might or might not take place will do so in here. Im not sure if they are able to do this procedure under water.

Orange Order Halls in the Republic of Ireland

Taken from cadolemo.com

A few years ago Eamon o Cuiv the minster for the gaeltacht and other things set up a group called cadolemo. This is basically a group that helps the orange order that is based in the republic.  The map shows the halls that are in each county. The numbers are:
Dublin 1
Leitrim 2
Cavan 7
Donegal 16
Monaghan 18
ROI total 44

The pics following come from a facebook page that took some photos of an attempt at a world record of the most orange banners in one parade. The ones here are all from Irish lodges.

Im told that there are plans afoot to resurrect old halls in Dublin and possibly one in Cork.

Hehe:)

Found on sneps.net

On a serious note last week the OO grands secretary Drew something or other spoke to the Irish seanad. In my opinion he said some good things. Apart from that its all a part of "normalizing" relationships between the two communities. However in his speech he talked about the OO in terms that suggest that it is still a highly big part of the protestant community. Perhaps it is but it would seem that this is the case in the sense that its facilities are used regularly (they have about 1400 halls) but its actual members are way down (latest i heard was around 30,000) and like the churches in the North- falling at a steady rate.

Plantations of Ireland

Pulled this off google and i can read the details. I'm also pretty sure that laois and offally were also planted. Curious to find out about the "Irish" planting of monaghan. Perhaps this was done by the descendants of the anglo-normans the so-called old english? Note also that the most protestant areas of Northern Ireland at the moment are the ones that were privately settled. The tea-party would like that.

Got this from wikipedia. Interesting to see the protestant enclaves within the republic. Will find out what these are. Only border ward with high percentage of protestants? Aughnacloy.

Got this from the cain website. Would love to see a similar map for 1922. You'd wonder why they didn't put fermanagh in the free state.

Belfast catholic protestant demographics 1991 - 2001

From 91 census. Source wesley Johnston website

From 2001 census. Source PULSE website

From 2001 census. Left diagram represents elderly people the right represents the youth. I don't know what ages were used to decided what constitutes young and old.  Source PULSE website.

Update: the above is from the cain website. Its shows the wards around belfast as well in 2001.  I'm told by locals that there is a "protestant flight" happening with protestants leaving belfast to go to the ring around it. Ive also heard this called the greening of belfast. The results of the last census should confirm this trend.
